The Olde Standby

There’s something about World of Warcraft that just keeps me coming back for more. Or maybe it’s something about all the other MMOGs that just can’t keep my attention for long. Whatever the case may be, I’m back in Azeroth! It makes me wonder what it is about WoW that makes it the standby and not some other game. So, for my first post in a year at the World of Warcraft chapter of Die by the Arrow, I’m gonna touch on some things that make WoW special.

Certain games we play seem to grab hold and never shake loose. They become an emotional attachment. Most make an impact early in our gamer lives – Zelda comes to mind as the game that hooked me back when I was¬† years old. The Elder Scrolls series hooked me in my early teens. And then along came Everquest in my late teens, forever addicting me to the MMOG drug of choice. World of Warcraft somehow became the game to fall back on when all others didn’t make the grade, for whatever reason. Read through the cut to get a glimpse of why WoW is the only MMOG that keeps people coming back for more.

I’m a Switcher

Let me begin by saying, when I started World of Warcraft in the vanilla beta, I was a Hordie. My very first character was Aalwein, a troll hunter. My trusted companion was Death Flayer (which took a several hours camp to get). That character still exists today… transported from Arthas to Khaz’Goroth and renamed Gesthal. He never got past level 54, never made any real progress in tradeskills, and the only action he has seen in the last 6 years or so has been laundering Horde cooking recipes and cosmetic pets onto the Alliance market. So when I say “I’m a switcher,” it’s a bit like saying I’m back to my roots.

Since my wife (girlfriend at the time) started playing WoW, I’ve been Alliance. Mind you, blood elves didn’t exist yet and she refused to play an “ugly” character. So along came her cute little gnome mage with pink pigtails while a new Aalwein was born, of the night elven lineage. Years later, my account is dotted with characters on many servers, but the only ones out of their teens, aside from Gesthal, are Alliance characters. That is, until just last week; Saporo is my new blood elf warrior. Hit the jump to find out why I’m a switcher.

Once Bitten, Twice Awesome

Back when Blizz announced the goblin and worgen races, I wasn’t the least bit interested in them. As we got closer to the Cataclysm, however, I started seeing more videos of them and I started to get more interested in them. The animations and spell effects for changing between human and worgen are very cool and the bow animations are pure awesome. So I said to myself, “Self, you should race change!” I was set on changing my gnome warrior into a worgen.

When the time came, I was a little tight on extra cash. I mean, we’re¬ living on one income now and it is Christmas time, after all. So I had to wait. And the more I had to wait, the more I realized – there’s already too damn many worgen warriors. So what can I do?! Read on, dear reader!
