Introducing Die by the Blaster!

December 21, 2011 - 7:07 pm No Comments

Hello everyone! Thanks for visiting.

In the same fashion as Die by the Arrow, I’ve started a blog, Die by the Blaster, that will feature my exploits in STAR WARS: The Old Republic and will focus on the ranged damage expert class, Imperial Agent Sniper. I will be providing leveling, build, and play-style advice. As always, it will be aimed towards mastering the end-game without bringing that “elitist” mentality, keeping things easy enough for and relevant to the average player. Along the way I will touch on Sith Inquisitors and general SWTOR gameplay and features.

In the next couple days I will be commenting on the first 30 levels or so of the game, featuring hotspots on Hutta, Dromund Kaas, Balmora, and Nar Shaddaa. I’ll drop some tips on the best way to solo and my planned build for level 50.

Check out the blog and subscribe to the Die By the Arrow Network Twitter and Facebook page for updates.

Chronicle of a Quarter Century

November 28, 2011 - 6:29 pm No Comments

While I can’t say that I’ve overly enjoyed the time I’ve spent in Japan, I can say there have been moments when I was overjoyed to be here. The Tokyo Game Show. The Akihabara (aka. Electric City). School girl outfits… eh, sorry, off topic there.

I recently took a trip back to Rapongi. I hadn’t been there since 2007 when I first arrived here in Japan. We came across the Mori Art Museum advertisement and I saw the poster for “The Dragon Quest Chronicle of a Quarter Century” and I immediately said out loud, “Oh, I’ve GOT to see this.” Something like ¥6000 later for my family of four, we were looking at gaming history. Hit the jump to read about my journey through 25 years of Dragon Quest history. (more…)

The Fractured Front - Deepholm

Seasonal events – oh how I love to hate them. It used to be about getting the What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been achievement for the Master Flying reward… but then I accidentally bought the flying so now it’s simply about getting the achievement points. The drake isn’t a bad reward either.

So anyway, Love is in the Air… this seasonal is pretty easy. After a few days of the dailies, you’ll pretty much be set to finish all the achievements, including the bonus achievements Tough Love, Lovely Luck Is On Your Side, and Perma-Peddle (that’s the cupid pet). Read on to find a quick and easy little guide for this colorful seasonal event and your Fool for Love achievement.

How To: Playing WoW on Dual Monitors

Dual Monitor World of Warcraft

Some people have asked how I have my game playing across both monitors, so below is my tutorial on how to set it up. It’s not for the faint of heart and requires a good knowledge of editing shortcuts and the WoW config file and monitor resolutions.

The benefits of this setup is so you can have nothing but health bars, hotbars, and aura alerts on your main screen while everything else is on the off-screen. Keeps everything super clean and clear on the monitor you look at the most while maintaining the same FPS since the off-monitor is not rendering anything. Read through the break for all the techy details on setting up a dual-monitor WoW.

Val & Thera First Kill

A few days after the guild drama, a roster cut by well over half its normal raiders, a new website, and the switch from Ventrilo to Mumble, Imminent Destruction was back on top. We carried our Halfus lockout into a new week and Valiona & Theralion went down after many hard fought attempts.

That was last week. This week we started fresh. With everyone amped up we stormed into Halfus’s lair and one-shot the dude. Five of us died in the process, but a win is a win. We got some very happy loot. After collecting ourselves we went to fight the sisters high on life. It was ugly. They showed us just how mean they are. After 14 attemps and a good handful of unlucky RNG deaths, they finally went down. Yaegar got more loots – yeah he’s definitely a loot whore. Read through the cut to get a little insight into the dungeon that is Bastion of Twilight.

I’m a Switcher

February 3, 2011 - 12:03 pm 1 Comment

Let me begin by saying, when I started World of Warcraft in the vanilla beta, I was a Hordie. My very first character was Aalwein, a troll hunter. My trusted companion was Death Flayer (which took a several hours camp to get). That character still exists today… transported from Arthas to Khaz’Goroth and renamed Gesthal. He never got past level 54, never made any real progress in tradeskills, and the only action he has seen in the last 6 years or so has been laundering Horde cooking recipes and cosmetic pets onto the Alliance market. So when I say “I’m a switcher,” it’s a bit like saying I’m back to my roots.

Since my wife (girlfriend at the time) started playing WoW, I’ve been Alliance. Mind you, blood elves didn’t exist yet and she refused to play an “ugly” character. So along came her cute little gnome mage with pink pigtails while a new Aalwein was born, of the night elven lineage. Years later, my account is dotted with characters on many servers, but the only ones out of their teens, aside from Gesthal, are Alliance characters. That is, until just last week; Saporo is my new blood elf warrior. Hit the jump to find out why I’m a switcher.

Taming Rare Pets… Again!

January 27, 2011 - 12:14 pm 1 Comment

So since my last post about rare pets, I’ve been checking on spawns, camping them for an hour here or there. Sitting in one spot for too long brings flash backs of my younger days… back in Everquest camping Stormfeather for the quest item that rewarded me with the epic Eyepatch of Plunder. That camp was 96 hours straight, logged in the entire time, napping off and on with my speakers up so loud it would wake a bear on Christmas – oh, and I was four or five boxing at any given time as well. My guild renamed the zone after that… from Iceclad Ocean to “Aalwein’s Frozen Buttprint.”

Needless to say, I’m too old and too damned busy now to actually sit on a spawn point for too long. I had basically relegated myself to a collection of tamed boss pets and a few random semi-rares here and there. But one day, on my regular patrol for spirit beasts, I finally came across a winner. Read through the break to find out about my “Great Taming Day.”

Week One Wrap-up

ODS First Kill

Our third night of raiding is over – that wraps up week one of raiding, the first week of raiding post-Cataclysm. We spent most of the second raid night this week (17 attempts, in fact) focused on the Omnitron Defense System. As I said in my previous post, we almost got it. Well, we walked in to the fight on night three and one-shot the thing! There was a bit of toon swapping before the fight, though, so I didn’t have a log. Not to worry, this won’t happen again! I have LoggerHead now – no more forgotten /combatlog commands!

With the whole night ahead of us (granted a bit of a late start) we moved on to Maloriak. Honestly, I think we were all high after one-shotting ODS (and more then a few raiders were drunk) so we really didn’t make a lot of progress. But it was fun all the same. One thing to note, Pyremaw, one of the trash mobs in the cauldron outside Maloriak’s room, is a pain in the ass. Do your guild a favor – stack, smash the aoe (use cooldowns), and aoe heal. It’s the easy way! Read on for my first review of Cataclysm raiding. (more…)

Return of the Raid

January 9, 2011 - 11:21 pm No Comments

Magmaw First KillAfter only two nights of raiding, Imminent Destruction dropped our first boss since the release of Cataclysm. Our first night was very rough. Not only do we have new skills and abilities to master in a raid environment, we have new bosses, new strategies, and new boss mechanics to learn. However, even though on our first night we only managed to drop Magmaw to 48%, we learned very quickly and by the end of the evening we were clicking very well. We knew what we were doing wrong and where we needed to improve. I only had one thing to say: damn it’s good to be raiding again.

Night two was a great success. We came in loaded with a new strategy against Magmaw. The first go was messy – we had to get a feel for this new strategy. The second and third tries were progressively better. On the fourth try, Magmaw was toast – and we got the Parasite Evening achievement to boot! I’m sure the healers will emphatically disagree, on that fourth go it really showed the fight is not all that hard. It’s all about timing and movement. And that, my friends, brings me to the key to Cataclysm raiding thus far. (more…)
