When “Hard Fun” Becomes “Too Hard”

Let’s be honest, World of Warcraft holds the grand stigma of being just a touch more difficult than Hello Kitty World. Outside of raiding, this was fairly true. WoW is a very easy game. One can easily solo from level 1 to 85 in a matter of a week or two, depending on the time committed. Cataclysm has brought about a huge shift in that mentality. Cataclysm heroics have become healer nightmares that have many players asking themselves “when does this game start being fun again?”

The truth is, Cataclysm heroics are nothing like the Wrath heroics we have come to know and love. Part of this is because we simply need time to get to know Cata dungeons. Knowing what is coming at us and how to handle it is a huge part of making things “easy fun.” Part of the difficulty is in the lack of gearing. By the end of wrath, most of us were cruising around in a full set of epic gears; smashing through dungeons in raid-quality gear is like facing a terrorist militia in an Iron Man suit. How not to pull like a dope

With the launch of 4.0.1, a new combat system was implemented that allowed us to queue up our next shot. This was both good and bad. On the good side, we are not as much at the mercy of our ping to use a good rotation. Our next shot will now fire off on the server at nearly the speed the client expects it to. This is great for those hunters on bad connections.

The bad side is that we now have to be very careful when the mob is about to die. While we have the option to have auto attack turn off when our target changes, nothing stops it from auto targeting the next closest mob in range when we press the next command. Once Bitten, Twice Awesome

Back when Blizz announced the goblin and worgen races, I wasn’t the least bit interested in them. As we got closer to the Cataclysm, however, I started seeing more videos of them and I started to get more interested in them. The animations and spell effects for changing between human and worgen are very cool and the bow animations are pure awesome. So I said to myself, “Self, you should race change!” I was set on changing my gnome warrior into a worgen.

When the time came, I was a little tight on extra cash. I mean, we’reĀ living on one income now and it is Christmas time, after all. So I had to wait. And the more I had to wait, the more I realized – there’s already too damn many worgen warriors. So what can I do?! Read on, dear reader!

Taming Rare Pets

When the rending of Azeroth occurred, the first thing I did was run to Felwood and tame myself the green cat, Winna’s Kitten. I hadn’t seen any hunter roaming around any of the popular digs for several weeks following but it didn’t take long for it to start becoming more common. My own guildies had to run out and copy-cat me (no pun intended)! Curses! So I decided to go tame the Oil-Covered wolf out in Borean Tundra. I still haven’t seen another hunter with my ExxonValdez model (btw, I still have buyer’s remorse – I wish I would have named it Shadow).

At this point, the taming bug has bitten me.

Taming rare pets is no new thing. The spirit beasts alone are a highly sought after and extremely draining tasks. Cataclysm has brought more spirit beasts and several new rare pets to tame. Two particularly interesting models are those of Samba and Terrorpene.

Samba (Ferocity, cat)

Terrorpene (Tenacity, turtle)

I grabbed Samba with very little resistance (I stole it right from out of the nose of a competing Horde hunter – huzzah!) and no camp time required. He was strolling along north of Thundermar right where Wowhead expected him to be. Terrorpene is a different evil.

I’ve already spent several hours sitting at Sulfuron Spire waiting for this turtle to spawn. So have about half a dozen other hunters. This one is going to be rough. I have to say the thought of having an incredible looking pet such as Terrorpene, especially one I can use without being in BM spec, is awesome – but I’m just not sure if I’m going to be able to sit on this one for long.

Cataclysm Dungeons and Quartermasters

I see it asked nearly every day in guild chat “Where is the [insert faction here] quartermaster?” or “Where is the entrance to [dungeon]?” So, instead of trying to describe it – especially to some admittedly bad navigators – I created a little visual guide. A Google maps of Cataclysm content, if you will.
